Tails from Ren Fair week 1

"So David, you wanna little head?" "NO!"- Conversation between girl and guy when looking for a face for a head dress costume they was making.

Saturday morning I get to fair. a line at the gate to get in is a little weird, usually you walk in. Had to give a name and the booth I worked at, then my father did the same. then on in to the booth. Sad to see the barbarian sign now a Mermaid Cove sign. The forrest has been cleared of every thing and a large amount of wooden fencing and burlap make a maze through the forrest to get to the new tank and then out. (more on the tank later) The drink cart is still across from the barbarians old booth part. The forrest in the mermaid area was spray painted, with a blue latex house paint. Not some thing i was expecting to see. Sigh...

Got to the booth. It is good to be able to just come in and know things will still be the same. product my change, but the booth stays the same. get all my gear in to the proper areas and out to my side of the booth. Fox tail have started to become to expensive and while it is nice to sell them, the product they are sending out is not good quality (as it is over 12 years old in some cases) and is not worth the money we would have to pay to sell them. We got jewel toned coyote tails. Big tails, might not be as fluffy, but still big. My skull wall is a little different. Usually have one large skull then smaller goats, rams, sheep, deer, a few african antelopes, and some times hogs. This year a large Alaskan grizzly bear skull (with paper work) hangs under a eland (large african antelope). I have a lot more of the African antelope than usual as well. Kind of cool to see this.

Sales was... not as good as they could have been, but not as could as they should. The heat stopped a lot of people out there from spending money or even staying. Saturday it was around 100, tho not as bad as it had been on a first saturday. Went and got my picture taken for my pass because it was so slow. Tho later on found out that I could have staid at the booth. The rest of my booth took and took photos at the booth and Carol sent them in a email to the people making the passes. (damn smart phones can do any thing)

Got to see some of the regulars out to the booth. i have been helping a short little mexican guy with his barbarian costume for a few years now. Didn't get to see him last year but he was out on monday. Good to see him. Also the tail guy come in. He has 19 tales and keeps wearing them all at once. looks odd. He didn't buy any of the tails we had because we only had "small" ones. (size queen) Got to see some others out there. To many to list, but you know who you are. :) Saw lots of unique hairdos this week end. One was so odd that I could not seem to put my finger on what it was about him. It's just now dawned on me that he was a rooster with a handle bar mustache. a few other hairdos was just old school. Lots of funny t-shirts. Costumes was out in full swing as well. One tardis dress, one Dr Who with Meredith from Brave as his companion, a dragon, a picichu/black and white harlequin, a few people in ren garb, 2 furries, that kept disrobing out of the costumes because of the freaking heat, and a few gaming characters. Oh and a werewolf with little red riding hood. To funny.

quotes from this week end

"Got my vegetarian sausage." - guy that got a pickle from the cart in the forest
"A porcupine ate the tip off my shoe"-boss talking about her shoe being bitten by a animal at a friends petting zoo
"So when you're stabbing a person, you are in control"-part of the neighbors sales pitch for a knife he was showing a person

Last year I told you about the stuff that makes up what my booth sales out at fair. This year I want to explore the reason what makes me come back every year. You see this is my 26th year out at fair, most of which I have worked at the fur booth. I have seen all types of weather out there. Heat, rain, and snow. (yes snow) hell we all had to sleep in the same room once at our booth once because it was so cold. Rain has caused mud slides and way to many slips and falls. So why do I come back every year? Not for the money, hell i don't take the trade i get every year for working in the booth. I will never become famous or any thing like that. So why do it? One reason is the tight knit family you become with a lot of the ren fair people. I know more about the people i work/have worked for and with than some of the relatives in my own family. Hell when Jim the Barbarian died half the people at his funeral was from KC ren fair or some of the other ren fairs he was at. They was like family to him and vice versa. I know some one who drove 4 and a half hours there to be at his funeral and then drove back the same day, they didn't want to miss it.

I question if this is really a good enough reason for the answer of why I go back every year tho. There is a lot of people i know out at fair that live 5 minutes away from me and I only see 7 weekends a year. So the people out there is part of it. but what is the answer to the reason i come back every year? I hope in the up coming tails I will be able to figure out the reason why.

It's always great to see you. I like the "Tails from Ren Faire," as it lets me share the craziness of being in a crafter shop, without actually working! :-P

I like working at the crafter booth because i get to see every one, yet not have to deal with them all. You all have to interact with them all. Woof

Well, I used to need to deal with all of them, but now I'm no longer working the Security gig. Instead, I'm just hosting the Bawdy Beer Show (the show formerly known as The Royal Smoker).

True, you did finally become smart and stopped playing purple shirt. :) But now you walk around fair, and that to me is insane, especially when there is to many people....

Amen to that
I could not stand to be a performer, I've been 'bad touched' just standing in a food line in garb...
